Open Afternoon 27.8.06
During the course of the afternoon nearly 300 people accepted the Hunt's invitation and made the journey up to the Kennels in Elham.
While the majority were from the village others came from further afield: Dover, Faversham, Deal, Ashford amongst others and even some visitors from East Sussex.
Two displays provided answers to many questions while members and supporters were available to talk about the hunt, how it operates under the Hunting Act and, most particularly, how people could become more involved.
A new "Handbook for Newcomers" was available that provided all of the information that anyone could need if they wished to follow the hunt on foot or mounted. (The Handbook is available for download - see the menu to the left).
One local resident commented: "I'm not really for or against hunting as such but this [the East Kent Hunt] is very much part of my village and I want to support them. The Hunting Act is a nonsense and I am certain that it will be repealed - let's hope that's sooner rather than later."
The mood amongst hunt supporters was resolute as they unanimously expressed their intention to keep things going until the Hunting Act is repealed.
Richard Blakeney, one of the two most senior professional huntsmen in the country, took delight in showing the hounds - the real stars of the afternoon. As promised hounds did their best to lick every visitor.
One or two, having spotted visitors with cakes, managed to dodge under Richard's watchful eye and see if they could supplement their diet. With as many as 40 hounds parading at one time (there are 70 in kennels) visitors were delighted and amazed that, in a trice, these miscreants were spotted and immediately called back by name. "How does he do that?" asked one visitor, "I have trouble remembering the names of my grandchildren!"
One young supporter, Toby Williams, brought some of his ferrets. They proved to be a particular hit with the younger visitors.

Nick Onslow, a Hunt supporter, commented:
"It was another very successful Open Afternoon which everybody seemed to enjoy. It was particularly pleasing to see so many new faces - people who had come along to discover for themselves what it's all about."
"Eighteen months after the introduction of the Hunting Act and support for the the restoration of proper hunting in East Kent is still growing as more and more people are dismissing the anti-hunt propaganda by finding out the truth."
"Our commitment is to do exactly what the informed public want and that is to keep going, within the law, to fight the the iniquity of the Hunting Act and to resume foxhunting as soon as our campaigning succeeds."
"We look forward to seeing some of our visitors 'following' during the forthcoming season and suggest that people pencil "Open Afternoon" into their diaries for 26.8.07 because, despite backbenchers' prejudiced wishes for our demise, we are going to be here and opening our gates once again."
