The East Kent Archive - a second miscellany
|
This has been scanned from a postcard that was produced in and posted from Elham in 1905. The date is approximate as the postmark is smudged but we know that Edward Smith was Post Master in Elham between 1900 and 1910 |
A meet of the East Kent outside the Rose and Crown in Stelling Minnis some time before the first war.The Hunt still meet at this pub, which is just a mile down the road from where this is being typed. Henry Selby-Lowndes is in the picture as he was huntsman and Master at the time. Unfortunately the crowds of foot followers these days are fewer in number and the ranks of onlookers are too often swollen by Animal Rights activists and hunt saboteurs. |

A meet of the EKH at Six Mile Filling Station on the Stone Street some time in the 1950s. This could not be compassed these days as the traffic on Stone Street (the main route from Hythe to Canterbury) is too heavy and too fast. The large block of forestry to the south east of this point has not been hunted for some time (three years) because it has gained a large group of self-styled "Eco-warriors" protesting against the possible development of a holiday complex. They have riddled the area with tunnels and littered it with their detritus. As is so often the case with such groups their understanding of ecology and conservation management is limited to the point that they do not understand that the hunt is an ecological ally. Instead they engage in the tired "class-war" approach and have proved to be a nuisance when the EKH have hunted nearby forestry. |
The new generation. The young lady to the right is the author's daughter - she rides and lives to hunt - long may she do so!! |
