There were times this year when it seemed unlikely that the Puppy Show could proceed. The tragic Foot and Mouth outbreak was still continuing in parts ofd the West Coutry, Wales and the North but by the grace of God there had been no further incidents in Kent since early April and with careful precautions the puppy show was able to provide one of the very few opportunities for the hunting people of East Kent to gather together since last season was promptly curtailed.

From its position above the small town of Elham kennels provides a wonderful vista of part of the country. Looking north along the Elham Valley on a bright June day it is hard to imagine that we stood looking over a scene that could disappear for ever if the Animal Rights fanatics were to have their way.
The East Kent are grateful to Gary Lee, Esq. M.F.H. of the Southdown and Eridge and Anthony Adams, Huntsman to the Heythrop, for attending to judge.
Thanks are also extended to that noble group - the Puppy Walkers.

This year marks the eightieth that Jim has followed the East Kent hounds. In 1921 his father first took him out in their three-wheeled Morgan car. The passion was immediate and his long association with hunting had begun. In his early years he followed whichever pack met near enough to be within bicycle range and with a conveniently placed home this gave him access to the Ashford Valley, East Kent and West Street Tickham. His involvement led to an interest in terrier work and the invention of the local version of terrier racing. To mark the occasion a bronze was purchased by subscription and presented to him by Mr. R. Older ex M.F.H. of the East Kent following a speech by Miss Whitehead. A speech that warned the recipient that the presentation was not in any way to be seen as marking retirement and that he would be expected as usual throughout next season and for many seasons to come. It is typical of the modesty of the man that as the presentation speech began, he was to be seen looking around for to spy the recipient, not for one moment imagining that it could be him. It is also typical of the fellow that he climbed over the hurdles to enter the ring, putting to shame many men of half his eighty-eight years! The Masters, subscribers and supporters of the East Kent wish him well and offer their thanks for his continuing support. The following day Old Norris received a telephone call from Jim asking that his thanks be made known through the pages of the Brush Telegraph - the East Kent Hunt's newsletter. |
