Nationally - did you know…?

60,000 horses are actively involved in hunting. The abolition of hunting would see the majority of these 60,000 made redundant and difficult to re-habilitate, a concern shared by the International League for the Protection of Horses.

199 out of the 209 Point-to-Point meetings being held this year are organised by hunts or hunt clubs.

To qualify to race in a Point-to-Point a horse must have been hunted a minimum of four times in the current hunting season. A total of 4092 horses qualified with hunts in 2002.

Each Point-to-Point rider is required to be a member or subscriber to a recognised hunt. The Jockey Club issued a total of 1020 rider qualification certificates in 2002.

Point-to-Pointing is a vibrant and popular country sport, attracting crowds in excess of three quarters of a million people in each year.

Point-to-Points are designed in part to raise funds for the organising hunt, but also to provide a competitive arena for the participants and a fun day out in the countryside for the spectators.

Unpaid help to run Point-to-Points is almost entirely from hunt members and supporters

Point-to-Point horses, when their racing careers are finished, go on to spend many years as hunters. The hunt field also provides an active retirement for many racehorses

The amateur status and "country' feel of point to point would finish if it managed to survive in some form after a ban. It would become an extension of the existing, already overcrowded professional racing circuit.

Many top National hunt jockeys have their interest in racing fired in the hunting field - Richard Dunwoody, Carl Llewellyn, Richard Johnson, Andrew Thornton all started their careers in Point-to-Point Racing.

"The BHB believes that a ban on hunting with dogs would severely undermine the present scale of Point-to-Pointing, and that this in turn would have a damaging impact on British Racing, hitting quality, the bloodstock, reducing the number of runners, cutting revenue and threatening jobs."
